Academic Support for Transfer Students

Transferring to a new college is an exciting journey, but it can also feel like a big adjustment. That’s why CSS is here! We are thrilled to welcome our transfer students to the Lion Pride and help them find support. We aim to help you feel right at home and ready to thrive here at TCNJ.

Support CSS Offers TCNJ Transfer Students:

    • Personalized support from a Transfer Support Specialist
    • Academic coaching to identify strategies to enhance their success
    • Tailored programming created exclusively to support transfer students
    • Intentional outreach to stay informed about key transfer-related information
    • Supplemental advising to help prepare for effective meetings with faculty advisors

How can I get help with my transfer credit?

    • Your Transfer Credit Report: To view how your courses transferred to TCNJ from a previous institution (i.e. how many units, what requirements they cover), you can view your Transfer Credit Report.
      • Find this in the “Academic Progress” tile in PAWS and click on “View Transfer Credit Report”
      • If you could use a hand in understanding how to read this report, reach out to your faculty advisor or make an appointment with CSS.
    • Your Faculty Advisor: If you believe your transfer credit is not showing correctly, or needs to be re-evaluated. They may be able to review major coursework or connect with someone in the department who can.
      • You can find your assigned advisor in the “Academic Progress” tile on the PAWS homepage and then click on “Advisors”.
    • Your Academic Evaluator: They can answer your questions regarding College Core credit.
      • You can find your assigned Academic Evaluator in the “Academic Progress” tile on the PAWS homepage and then click on “Advisors”
      • Their information is also listed here broken down by major.
    • NJ Transfer Agreements: If you’re looking to see state transfer agreements, you can visit njtransfer.org. This site displays the transferability of individual courses from New Jersey community colleges to TCNJ.
    • Be Patient: Allow for time and be patient as credits are transferred. Evaluating courses for requirements and finalizing details with the appropriate offices can take some time. Stay proactive by checking in regularly to keep track of your progress.

TCNJ Lingo

Canvas: The learning management system that the College uses. This software enables professors and their students to communicate through sharing files such as the course syllabus, reading assignments, and more. For Canvas tutorials, check out the Canvas Guides linked here.

College Core: The College Core is a shared undergraduate academic experience designed to ensure that all TCNJ graduates have the essential skills, knowledge, and values needed to be successful and fulfilled in their personal, professional, intellectual, and civic lives.

Handshake: TCNJ’s recruitment program allows students and alumni to submit resumes to potential employers and/or interview one another regarding possible employment opportunities. Learn more with The Career Center.

Meal Equiv: For meal plans, one Meal Equivalency swipe is equal to a maximum of $9.38. A student may use only one Eickhoff Dining Hall swipe or one Meal Equivalency swipe during a meal period.

OWL:  Online Wellness Link, TCNJ’s secure student health portal. This is also where you can make Student Health Services appointments.  All health requirements are also completed using the OWL.

PAWS: Primary Academic Web Services (PAWS) is where you will access course descriptions, select classes for your shopping cart, find the required textbooks for your courses, review your academic requirements, update personal information, and more. Students can access PAWS through the TCNJ Today webpage. Check out the PAWS Help page for tutorials on how to navigate PAWS as a new TCNJ student.

Reading Days: The time designated as the “final exam period” contains both reading days and final exam days. It is expected that reading days will be a time during which students will be able to devote substantial time and effort to preparing for final evaluations. During the reading period, there should be no mandatory scheduled activities for a course, including in-class examinations (including make-up exams), presentations, or required meetings with instructors.

Roar App: Download the TCNJ Roar App and navigate to the organizations’ section to explore TCNJ student organization profiles, find out contact information, and more. The app also syncs class schedules with other events happening on campus, keeping everything in one place.

Roscoe: TCNJ’s beloved Mascot! Not to be confused with CSS’s home of Roscoe West Hall…

T Dubbs: Located on the ground level of Travers and Wolfe Residence Halls, T-Dubs is your late-night dining location and hang-out spot for many.

The Stud: Another name for The Brower Student Center – the heart of the campus! One of the most exciting parts of the Brower Student Center is the second floor, home to the offices of student organizations supporting a broad cross-section of the community with offices on the second floor. These spaces act as a home away from home for many students. Check out everything else that The Stud provides here.Unit: TCNJ courses are measured in “units.” Each unit is worth four “credits” as most US institutions measure their courses in credits or “credit hours.”
