Center for Student Success / Academic Affairs
The College of New Jersey utilizes an internal change of major application process for current students wishing to apply for a new major. Each department has thoughtfully created their process and requirements for students to apply for their respective major(s). To help students better understand each major’s application process, this page has been created to include major-specific advising. Official major requirements, including entrance requirements, can be found in the Bulletin. The Change of Major policy outlines the framework for the process of applying for a new or second major at The College of New Jersey.
To help you understand TCNJ’s change of major application process, we’ve included the below definitions:
Pre-Major vs. Major: Some majors accept students as “pre-major” status if they have not yet completed the required foundation coursework for their desired major. Students in the “pre-major” are assigned an advisor in their new major but must utilize the “What-If Report” in PAWS to view their academic requirements. Upon the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, all “pre-major” students are reviewed to determine if their status should be changed to full major status, if they should be dismissed from the pre-major, or if they should remain in the pre-major.
Entrance Requirements: As part of the major application process, departments may require up to TWO entrance requirements. Entrance requirements may include any of the following: a performance standard in specific foundational coursework, evaluation, application essay, interview, portfolio review, resume, etc. Please note that, in some cases, there may be additional requirements mandated by the state or by a programmatic accreditor. For example, students who seek to enter education programs must meet all state requirements.
Foundational Coursework: Foundational coursework refers to any required courses that must be completed to be accepted into a major.
